The Rheinmetall airburst ammunition (ABM) 30mm is the ideal solution for main armament, land- and ship-based anti-aircraft guns. Based on NATO-qualified Ahead technology, each ABM round contains a large number of programmable sub-projectiles and fuses, which are supplied with data from the fire control computer via the electric fuse programming coil as it leaves the barrel. and then succeeded in destroying a small and fast air target with a high probability of destruction.

Oerlikon Contraves uses integration kits to allow medium calibre gun systems in the calibre range from 30mm to 76mm to be fitted with the capability to use the Ahead air burst technology. Currentlya number of Ahead ABM payload configurations are available:
- 152x3.3g subprojectiles as a payload for 35mm gun terrestrial air defence systems, 35mm gun naval air defence and anti-surface intruder craftsystems
- 407x1.24g subprojectiles as a payload for 35mm gun vehicle armament ground-to-ground systems
To date, payloads are being optimized and integrated in Ahead ABM rounds for many other specific tactical applications in various calibres, whereas the mass of subprojectiles can range from 0.25g to more than 20g.
